Sita Waru, a former Southland Conference track standout and seven-time SLC Athlete of the Year, is in her third season as an assistant track and field coach at Lamar. Waru works with distance runners and assists with the day-to-day operations of the track and field program. She also assists with the program's recruiting efforts and was instrumental in the signing of Lamar's four New Zealand student-athletes. Waru has played a key role in the development of the men's and women's cross country teams, which resulted in a pair of oustanding performances in the fall, including the first-ever women's conference title since the program's inception in 1985. A 2002 graduate of McNeese State, Waru ran collegiately for the Cowgirls, earning 17 individual titles in cross country, indoor and outdoor track. She also represented New Zealand in the 2000 World Cross Country Meet in Villamoura, Portugal. Prior to joining the LU coaching staff, Waru served as an assistant for S.J. Walsh Middle School in 2002. She also earned experience during the summer of 1999 as an assistant for the Whakatane Athletic Club in Whakatane, New Zealand. |
