Creech wins 5,000 meter crown at Howie Ryan Invitational

HOUSTON - Ryan Creech led the way on Friday as the Lamar track teams began competition at the Howie Ryan Invitational & Multi's at Yeoman Field House on the campus of the University of Houston.
Creech won the day's only title for the Cardinals, completing the 5,000 meter run with a time of 15:04.48, 16 seconds faster than the second place finisher. Alex De La Garza also competed in the event, ending sixth at 15:32.96.
Leslie Beard was 10th in the pole vault, topping 11 feet, 7.75 inches, the second-best mark in school history.
Ashley Idunoba also made news for the Cards, running the 60 meter dash in 7.69 seconds to advance to the next round on Saturday.
Nick Fyffe will also be preparing for a second day of action as well after a busy day in the heptathlon. The freshman posted the group's best mark in the long jump with a mark of 22 feet, 1.5 inches. He also ran the 60 in 7.39 seconds, threw the shot 36 feet, 2 inches and topped 5 feet, 11.25 inches in the high jump to end the day in fifth with 2,685 points. Houston's Kevin Johnson leads with a total of 2,880.
Elsewhere, Treyvon Davis had an impressive showing in the 400 meter B group, finishing with a time of 51.17 to place second to UTSA's Darryl Wyrick. Ronnie Whitty was ninth at 52.09.
Sarah Shim was the top B group finisher for the women, completing the event in 59.64 seconds.
