Cardinals Capture Two Events in Houston Meet

HOUSTON, Texas - Members of the Lamar University men's and women's track teams won two events at the Houston Indoor Invitational track meet over the weekend.

On the men's side, Maarten Van Dyck and Joonas Harjamaki comined for a 1-2 finish in the 1-mile run, with Van Dyck winning with a time of 4 minutes, 13.05 seconds. Harjamaki was second in 4:14.09.

In the women's competition, Lamar's Joyce Cheruiyot won the 5,000-meter run in 18:00.22.

The Cardinals had a number of other top finishes at the meet. In the men's 400-meter dash, Greg Williams was fourth (49.15) and Julius Kasule was 14 eighth (49.86). Jerel Massenburge was 11th in the men's 200-meter dash (22.59).

Josh Raglon of Lamar was 14th in the men's 800 meters with a time of 1:59.96. HIllary Samoei of the Cardinals was 14th in the mile run in 4:26.26. Matt Johnsen of the Cardinals was eighth in the men's 3,000 meters in 8:44.61.

The Lamar men's 4x400 relay team of Justin Krautz, Julius Kasule, Greg Williams and Jerel Massenburge was third in 3:20.97.

In the women's competition, Lamar's Ashley Idunoba was 19th in the 200 meters with a time of 26.21 seconds. Lamar's Carmen Gedling was sixth in the 400 meters (58.90), while teammate Ashley Smith was 17th (1:00.45).

Lamar's Samantha Walkow was fifth in the one-mile run (5:08.35). Teammate Marlou Biljsma was 16th (5:22.73). Daisy Cantu of Lamar was seventh in the 5,000 meters (20:35.46).

The Lamar quartet of Carmen Gedling, Ashley Idunoba, Alisha Cofer and Ashley Smith was eighth in 4:01.31.
