Cardinal Track Runs Strong at Bayou Classic

BEAUMONT - The Lamar University track teams turned in several strong performances and set one new school record at the Victor Lopez/Rice Bayou Classic, held at the Rice University in Houston. Amanda King turned in the top performance for Lamar over the weekend, setting a new Bayou Classic and Lamar University record in the 3,000 meter steeplechase, posting a regional qualifying time of 10:48.02. The junior from Tauranga, New Zealand shattered the meet record of 11:06.58, and finished more than 25 seconds ahead of the second place finisher in the race. Toni Sylvester also ran strong for the Lady Cardinals, finishing in second place in the 400 meter dash with a 55.71 performance. Clerc Koenck grabbed a third place finish in the mile run with a 4:39.44, Jessika Johnson placed fourth in the 100 meter hurdles with a 14.74 and the Lady Cards 4 x 100 team of Sylvester, Rosalyn Capps, Chinelo Nwobu and Porsche Williams took third place with a 47.23 performance. On the men's side Danny Shaw led the way grabbing two top five finishes, taking second in the 1,500 meter run with a 3:52.10, and fifth in the 800 meter run with a 1:53.92. The men's 4 x 400 relay team of Damien Broomes, Christopher Sams, Phillip Thornton and Stephen Boon brought home a second place finish with a 3:14.57 performance, while Ben McBride collected a fifth place finish in the men's 3,000 meter steeplechase in a time of 9:42.74.
