Lamar Captures Three Titles to Close Out SLC Outdoor Championships
May 6, 2007 NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Lamar University men's and women's track teams closed out the Southland Conference men's and women's outdoor track and field championships Sunday evening by winning three individual titles, one in the men's competition and two women's titles at the Fletcher Gardner Track at Stephen F. Austin University. In the team competition, the Lady Cards placed fifth with 86 points, while the Cardinal men finished in ninth place with 47 points. Clerc Koenck opened the individual running events on the final day by defending her championship in the women's 1,500 meter run, coasting to a two second win at 4:44.92. She defeated teammate Amanda King who took the silver medal in a time of 4:46.07. Rachel Kingsford finished in ninth place in the race, posting a time of 4:57.37, and Merci Bungei took 11th place in 5:02.07. In the men's 1,500 meter run, Francis Kasagule grabbed second place with a 3:49.91 performance, just a hair behind winner Shadrack Songok of Texas A&M Corpus Christi, who ran a 3:49.67. Danny Shaw, the 1,500 meter defending champion, finished in fifth place in a time of 3:56.42, while Aaron Brannen took eighth place with a personal-best performance of 3:58.32. Jessika Johnson grabbed a sixth place finish for Lamar in the women's 100 meter hurdles, sprinting to a time of 14.16. It was the second straight year for Johnson to finish in the top eight at the SLC meet.
After running a personal-best in the prelims, Brittany Pollard raced to a seventh place finish in the women's 400 meter dash in a time of 58.06. In the men's 100 meter dash, Michael Gauthier grabbed a sixth place finish in a time of 10.64 It is the second time in his career that Gauthier has finished among the top six at the SLC meet, as he took third as a freshman in 2005. The Lady Cards picked up points in the women's 800 meter dash as Koenck and Karesse Lethermon finished in fifth and seventh place respectively. Koenck grabbed the fifth spot with a time of 2:15.03, while Lethermon was seventh with a time of 2:15.84. Ewan Simpson earned all-conference honors in the men's 800 meter run, finishing in third place. Simpson ran a personal-best and Lamar season-best 1:52.12 to take the bronze medal. Alexandra Mayfield made a splash in the women's 400 meter hurdles, running a personal best of 1:02.09 for second place finish. Her silver medal winning performance is the fourth fastest in school history. Renee Graham, in a similar fashion to her championship performance in Friday's 10,000 meter run, coasted until the final lap and a half of the women's 5,000 meter run before surging by a pair of Stephen F. Austin runners for the championship in a time of 17:20.35. King, who was 30 meters behind the Ladyjack runners until the final 150 meters of the race, scooted past the pair as well for a second place finish in a time of 17:24.55. Koenck finished off her impressive meet with a fifth place finish in the 5,000 in a time of 17:52.38, in her third final of the afternoon. Stacey Monteau finished the race in ninth place in a time of 18:32.14. In the men's 5,000 meter run, the final lap was a repeat of the 1,500 meter run, as Kasagule and Songok of Texas A&M Corpus Christi battled down the final 150 meters. This time it was Kasagule who prevailed, edging out Songok for the win in a time of 14:36.91, while Songok clocked in at 14:37.18. Frank Bwambale also scored points in the 5,000 for LU, finishing in fifth place in a time of 14:55.63, while Shaw finished in 14th place in a time of 14:36.91. The meet was closed out with the men's and women's 4x400 meter relay. The Lady Cardinals grabbed a seventh place finish in a time of 3:54.90, while the men grabbed seventh place with a season-best 3:18.40 performance.
