Stabler sets record at Birmingham Invitational

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Lamar University's Sam Stabler set a Birmingham Crossplex facility record in the men's 3,000 meters to highlight the second and final day of the Birmingham Invitational indoor track meet Thursday. Stabler's time of 8 minutes, 16.64 seconds was nearly 9 seconds better than the previous mark of 8:25.54 established just five days earlier by Ty McCormac. Stabler was one of three Cardinals to finish in the top four of the event. Matt Johnsen was third in 8:25.25, while Ryan Creech placed fourth in 8:34.10. Other top finishers on the men's side for Lamar include Chris Smith, who won the 800 meters in 1:53.03, Joe Wade, who took the mile run in 4:09.32 and the distance medley relay team of Wade, Jonathan Edwards, Mark Woodley and Alex De La Garza, which captured first place with a time of 10:48.42. On the women's side, Sam Walkow won the mile run in 4:47.27. The Lamar 4x400 relay squad of Becky Gough, Tessa Denis, Katrine Vaesel and Walkow took first in 12:!7.18. Taylor Cloy captured second in the 3,000 meters with a time of 10:05.09. There was no team scoring. LAMAR
