Walkow honored by Southland Conference

BEAUMONT, Texas - Lamar University's Samantha Walkow was named the Southland Conference Women's Track and Field Athlete of the Week the conference announced Wednesday. Walkow had a strong showing for Lamar at the Birmingham Invitational last week. Walkow won the mile run in 4 minutes, 57.27 seconds and anchored Lamar's winning effort in the distance medley relay. "It's great news that Samantha received the award," Lamar coach Trey Clark said. "She's off to a fantastic start to the season." Walkow was an All-Southland Conference performer in cross country this season and is the defending indoor track champion in the 3,000 meters. The conference also announced that Lamar's Sam Stabler received honorable mention status in this week's Men's Athlete of the Week voting. Stabler won the men's 3,000 meters at the Birmingham Invitational in a facility-record time of 8:16.64 at the Birmingham Crossplex. The Lamar track teams return to action at the Iowa State Classic scheduled for Feb. 9-10. LAMAR
