The Lamar University track and field teams will head to Houston for the 30th annual Southland Conference indoor track and field championship, held at the Yeoman Field House on the campus of the University of Houston on Friday and Saturday.
Entering the meet, the Lamar men are looking to improve upon their fourth place finish from a year ago. The Cardinals scored 62 points at the 2008 Indoor Championship and are poised to better that mark this season. The Lady Cardinals recorded a fourth place finish as well a year ago, scoring 72 points.
Entering the meet the Cardinals will look to pile up points in the distance events, led by Francis Kasagule who ranks first in the conference in the mile and the 3,000 meter run while ranking second in the 800 meter run. He has season-best times of 4:04.93 in the mile, 8:01.19 in the 3,000 and 1:52.63 in the 800.
Samuel Kosgei is the conference leader in the 5,000 meter run with a time of 13:56.09, while ranking second in the 3,000 with a time of 8:17.99. Drew Bean is second in the 5,000 meter run with a time of 14:50.58, and is fifth in the 3,000 with a time of 8:31.35.
HIllary Samoei is third in the 3,000 with a top performance of 8:27.30, and fourth in the 800 with a time of 1:53.31. Frank Bwambale rounds out the Cardinals top five distance performers, ranking fifth with a time of 15:37.96.
The Men's distance medley relay will also look to put points on the board for the Cards, as they seek their third straight SLC title.
In the sprints, Jerel Massenburge is the highest ranking Cardinal runner, ranking fifth in the SLC in the 400 meter dash with a season-best time of 49.09.
On the women's side the young Lady Cardinals will look to make a splash behind the running of Sandy Castro
who ranks second in the league in the 5,000 meter run with a time of 17:56.61 and is fifth in the 3,000 with a time of 10:22.11.
Taylor Cloy also ranks in the top five for Lamar, entering the meet is the No. 5 runner in the 5,000 meter run with a time of 18:33.69.
The running portion of the meet gets under way at 3 p.m. on Friday with the women's mile prelims. Finals on Friday will be the 5,000 meter runs and the DMR's.
