BEAUMONT – Most of the Lamar track team will be in action this weekend as the Cardinals are set to open the 2013 outdoor season at the Victor Lopez Bayou Classic on the campus of Rice University.
The event marks the first for LU since the Southland Conference Indoor Championships a few weeks ago, and a number of Cards will be looking to build on successful indoor showings.
“This is a good meet for us, year-in and year-out,” head coach Trey Clark said. “It’s always a good way to open the season and see a lot of strong college competition. It will let us see exactly where we’re at coming off of a month-long break. We’re really excited to get things going.”
In last year’s event, both Joe and Tom Wade took home individual crowns with the former winning the 1,500 meter run and the latter taking home the 5,000 meter title. Matt Johnsen made a splash as well, finishing second in the 5K.
Ashley Idunoba, Becky Gough, Nora-Beth Saunders and Beatrice Douglas are the only returning scorers from last season’s women’s meet.
“For the most part, everybody will be competing this weekend,” Clark said. “We’ve got a few injuries left over from the indoor season, so we’ll take this week to let a few of those guys rest, but the rest of the team will be out there.”
This year, over 600 athletes are slated to participate and teams from 21 schools will make the trek to Houston. Notre Dame will be looking to repeat after both its men’s and women’s team took home the team title last year. Also participating will be fellow Southland members McNeese State, Stephen F. Austin and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
