FRISCO – After taking home a pair of individual titles at Saturday’s Sam Houston State Quad Meet, Beatrice Douglas became the first Lamar athlete this season to earn the Southland Conference’s Field Athlete of the Week award on Tuesday.
Douglas took home the high jump title by clearing five feet, five inches, and she followed up later in the day with a distance of 18 feet, 11.75 inches in the long jump. The Silsbee native became the second-best performer in school history in the long jump during indoor season, and she also ranks second on the outdoor list after jumping 19 feet, nine inches last year.
“I think that my indoor season definitely helped prepare me for outdoors,” Douglas said of her performance on Saturday. “The good thing about meets like this is that it allows you to come in and get reps. It also lets you make mistakes and learn from them, but I felt like I did well in the long jump.”
Douglas earned two of the nine individual titles that LU picked up in Huntsville over the weekend.
After both Joe Wade and Becky Gough took home weekly honors during indoor season, Douglas became the first Cardinal athlete to be honored as such outdoors.
Lamar will return to action later this week at McNeese State.
