FRISCO – Joe Wade and Beatrice Douglas were both honored by the Southland on Wednesday after impressive showings at this past Saturday’s Texas State Bobcat Classic, with Wade winning the 1,500 meter run and Douglas finishing third in the long jump.
Wade, a graduate student out of Isle of Wight, England, completed the race in a personal-best time of 3:45.32 to grab the top spot in the event on the Southland’s performance list. A week ago, he put up the top conference time in the 3,000 meter steeplechase at the Mt. SAC Relays, and his 5,000 meter time from March’s Stanford Invitational has yet to be matched in the SLC as well.
This marks the third weekly honor for Wade this year after earning it once during indoor season as well. The Englishman was named the Indoor Student-Athlete of the Year as well after taking home the conference championship in the mile and finishing third in the 3,000 meter run.
It’s also the second weekly honor for Douglas this season after she grabbed a pair of individual titles at the SHSU Quad Meet last month. The junior out of Silsbee posted a mark of 19 feet, 1.25 inches at Saturday’s meet, her best jump of the season, moving her to fifth in the Southland rankings.
The two will look to parlay the individual achievements into continued success at the Southland Outdoor Championships in Lake Charles next weekend.
