Lamar has strong outing at Sam Houston State Twilight

HUNTSVILLE, Texas - Erin Brown won the women's long jump to highlight Lamar's effort at the Sam Houston State Twilight Invitational on Thursday.

Brown had a leap of 5.71 meters (18 feet, 9 inches) to lead a 1-2 Lamar finish in the event. Teammate Beatrice Douglas was second at 5.63 meters (18-5.75).

In other women's events, Lamar's Denisha Nichols was fourth in the discus at 34.86 meters (114-4), Leslie Beard was fourth in the pole vault with a school record of 3.53 meters (11-7). Ashley Idunoba took third in the 200 meters in 24.32 seconds. The women's 4x400 relay squad of Elzbieta Gawron, Wilika Williams, Carmen Gedling and Saschelle Slaughter was second in 3:19.57.

In men's competition, the Cardinals went 2-3 in the 110-meter high hurdles. Jamal Nash was second in 14.77 seconds, while Corey Atkins was third in 14.84.

Andy Fontenot was third in the men's long jump with an effort of 7.04 meters (23-1.25). Teammate Michael Lester was fourth at 6.90 (22-7.75). Chris Jones of the Cardinals was third in the men's 800 meters with a time of 1:55.21. The men's 4x400 relay team of Jonathan Edwards, Nash, Josh Raglon and Chris Smith was second in 3:19.57.



Thursday's meet served as Lamar's last tune-up before the Southland Conference Championships that are set for May 11-13 at Texas State University San Marcos.
