Tom Wade named SLC Student-Athlete of the Year

BEAUMONT, Texas - ¨C Lamar University¡¯s Tom Wade was named the Southland Conference Student-Athlete of the Year for men¡¯s track, the conference announced today.
Wade (Isle of Wight, England), a senior, was named a second©\team All©\American after finishing 13th in the 3,000©\meter steeplechase at the 2012 NCAA Outdoor Championships. The kinesiology major boasts a 4.00 grade©\point average and was named to the CoSIDA Academic All©\District Team. Wade won the 1,500 meters at the conference championships. He is the second Lamar runner to be named student©\athlete of the year this season, joining Matt Johnsen, who earned the award for the cross country and indoor seasons.
Wade was one of five Lamar student-athletes named to the conference¡¯s All-Academic Cross Country and Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field teams. He was joined by his twin brother Joe Wade along with Johnsen on the men¡¯s team. Samantha Walkow and Taylor Cloy represented Lamar on the women¡¯s team.
Joe Wade, who was also named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District team, won the Southland Conference indoor title in the mile run and the outdoor title in the steeplechase. Like his brother, he carries a 4.00 GPA in kinesiology.
Johnsen (Broulee, Australia), a junior who was the Southland Conference champion in the indoor 5,000 meters, joined the Wades as top-10 finishers at the Southland Conference Cross Country Championships as Lamar won its sixth straight team title. Johnsen has a 3.31 GPA in kinesiology. This is Johnsen¡¯s second consecutive year on the conference¡¯s all-academic team.
Walkow (Surrey, British Columbia), a junior, makes her second consecutive appearance on the all-academic team. This past season, she won the Southland Conference crown in the indoor mile and placed second in the 3,000 meters. She was fifth in the 1,500 meters at the conference outdoor meet and earned all-conference honors in cross country after placing eight at the Southland championships. Walkow has a 3.68 GPA in psychology.
Cloy (Magnolia, Texas), a senior, placed fourth in the 5,000 meters and seventh in the 3,000 meters at the Southland Conference indoor meet. She just missed out on all-conference honors in cross country by placing 11th at the conference championships. Cloy, who has a 3.47 GPA in nursing, makes her second appearance on the all-academic team.
