SAN MARCOS – Cortney Moore tied a career-high with 15 kills and Chelsea Grant added nine blocks as the Lamar volleyball team closed out play at the Texas State Classic with a 3-1 (25-21, 26-28, 25-15, 25-14) victory over Quinnipiac.
Moore, winner of the 2012 Southland Freshman of the Year award, hit a blistering .423 for the match and added three blocks. Grant, who made her collegiate debut a night ago after sitting out 2012 with a redshirt, added seven kills, and Sierra Whittaker rounded out the top offensive performers with 10.
Alexa Johnson was responsible for facilitating the impressive display, dishing out 35 assists and picking up three aces from the service line. She also added seven digs and four kills.
Megan Schwartz headed up the back line with a match-high 17 digs.
After splitting the opening two sets, the Lady Cardinals came out of the break on a mission, hitting .387 behind 11 kills from the trio of Moore, Whittaker and Madi Martin. The good fortune continued into the fourth and final set as Grant and Whittaker combined for nine kills, helping LU out-hit the Bobcats .375 to .080.
In Saturday’s earlier match, Moore and Nicole Parish each collected seven kills, but the Lady Cards fell in 3-0 (25-17, 25-13, 25-18) fashion to SMU.
Lamar will return to action on Monday with a Labor Day matinee vs. Texas Pan-American in the 2013 home opener at McDonald Gym. First serve is set for 1 p.m.
