SAN ANTONIO – Madi Martin supplied seven kills on Friday afternoon, but ultimately, it wasn’t enough for the Lamar volleyball team as they closed out play at the UTSA Classic with a 3-0 (25-18, 25-19, 25-13) loss to Loyola Marymount at the Convocation Center.
Martin, who tallied 13 kills in a pair of matches on Thursday, finished the tournament with a team-best total of 20. Cedar Young, who also tallied 13 kills a day ago, posted six in Friday’s encounter, but as a team, the young Lady Cardinals (1-7) were out-hit .330 to .143.
Cortney Moore also contributed heavily to LU’s effort with six kills at a .444 rate, and the duo of Sara Landis and Nicole Parish combined for seven more. Alexa Johnson added 24 assists.
Defensively, Megan Schwartz posted a game-high in digs for the third time at the UTSA Classic with 11. Erika Rojas added 10, and Martin had six.
After LMU put together a coast-to-coast victory in the opening set, the Lady Cards came out strong in the second, leading for much of the early goings before a four-point run by the Lions put LU behind 12-10. The Red and White would hang around, maintaining the two-point difference out to 20-18 before a 5-1 Lion run ended any opportunity for a comeback.
The two sides played even through the first seven points of the third, but the LMU attack continued to pick up steam, out-hitting Lamar .333 to .120 to secure the sweep.
The Lady Cards will return to action on September 10 at McDonald Gym. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
