Lamar Volleyball Drops Five Game Decision to Virginia Tech

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - After a dismal start against Virginia Tech in their final match of the Arkansas Invitational at Barnhill Arena on Saturday afternoon the Lamar University volleyball team made a furious rally that came up just short in a 3-2 loss.

The Hokies opened the match with a pair of dominating wins, claiming sets one and two by scores of 25-16 and 25-17. The Lady Cards offense was non existent hitting -.065 and .000 while the Virginia Tech offense posted hitting percentages of .238 and .229.

In set three Lamar turned the tables on the Hokies and took control of the momentum. The Lady Cardinals hit .264 en route to a 25-18 win and followed with a 25-23 win to take the fourth set.

In the final set the Hokies again jumped out to an early lead at 10-5, but Lamar would not go away. The Lady Cards rallied back and closed to within 11-9 before falling 15-13 to end the match.

The Lady Cards were led by Bailey Smith who picked up a career-high 21 digs while Genevieve Gladle grabbed 15. Ashley Todd led the LU offense with 29 assists while Lauren Holdorff and Kaci Brewer each had nine kills.

The Lady Cardinals are scheduled to play the University of Houston on Wednesday night at 7:00 in Houston, Texas pending the conditions after Hurricane Ike.
