HUNTSVILLE, Texas -- Lamar was unable to get the offense it needed and fell to Sam Houston State, 3-0, in the Southland Conference opener for both teams at Johnson Coliseum Friday night.
Lamar (4-6, 0-1 SLC) got seven kills apiece from Kaci Brewer, Lauren Holdorff and Wendy Krell but hit just .080 for the match.
Sam Houston (6-7, 1-0 SLC) was led by Carli Kolbe's 15 kills and .345 hitting, to go along
with Anna Ferguson's 11 kills, six block assists and five service aces. The Bearkats hit
.198 and held a 12-8 edge in team blocks.
In the first set, SHSU jumped out to a 13-5 lead and held a cushion of at least five
points the remainder of the set before taking a 25-17 score.
LU led 6-4 in the second before yielding a 9-7 advantage to SHSU. The set had five ties
and two lead changes before the Bearkats came away with a 26-24 win. The Lady Cardinals fought back from a 22-16 hole to tie it at 23-23 and 24-24, but were unable to capitalize before dropping the set 26-24.
Despite not leading in the final set, Lamar did keep the Bearkats within striking distance but were unable to get any closer that two points down on four occasions, with the last
coming at 24-22 before a hitting error ended the match.
Lamar will return to action at the Bearkat Classic on Saturday with matches against
Central Michigan and North Texas.
