NATCHITOCHES, La. - The Lamar volleyball team hit .414 in the opening set on Thursday night, but the hot start wouldn't be enough as the Lady Cardinals fell 3-1 (26-24, 19-25, 15-25, 18-25) to conference foe Northwestern State at Prather Coliseum.
Wendy Krell had six kills on just seven swings in the first set, helping LU (9-16, 1-10 Southland) to a 26-24 victory, but the senior completed the match with just 10 at a blistering .562 rate. Sierra Whittaker added nine kills, and Cortney Moore posted eight to go along with six blocks.
Madi Martin quarterbacked the offense with 35 assists and three service aces.
Defensively, Erika Rojas led the charge with 12 digs and Whittaker added seven.
The opening frame featured 11 ties and three lead changes, but the most important came late as back-to-back Rebekah Rightnour and Moore kills fought off a pair of NSU set points to tie things up at 24-24. A Rojas ace gave the Lady Cards a chance at the frame, and a Caiti O'Connell attack error sealed the deal.
The rest of the match would prove to be less dramatic as the Lady Demons (15-8, 7-4 SLC) out-hit LU .291 to .090 over the final three sets.
The Lady Cards will continue play this weekend on Saturday with a match against Stephen F. Austin. First serve is set for 6:30 p.m.
