NACOGDOCHES – Sierra Whittaker picked up 15 kills and Cortney Moore added another 13, but unfortunately for the Lamar volleyball team, it wasn’t enough as the Lady Cardinals fell 3-1 (20-25, 21-25, 25-22, 21-25) to Stephen F. Austin at Shelton Gym on Saturday.

Whittaker, who has now totaled double-digit kills in 10 consecutive matches, hit .231 in the match, and Moore hit .276. However, SFA’s Tori Bates hit .500 with 20 kills, and the Lady Jacks out-hit the Lady Cards .245 to .163.

Defensively, Chelsea Grant was once again stout at the net, picking up six blocks, and Erika Rojas led the charge on the back row with 13 digs.

With the loss, LU fell to 8-16 on the year with a 6-6 Southland mark. SFA improved to 13-11 and 5-6 in conference.

After dropping the opening two stanzas, the Lady Cards got on the board with an exciting 25-22 third set victory. It was tight in the early goings of the frame, but Alexa Johnson and Lauren Stahlman each had solid serving runs as LU rode a 10-1 spurt to take a seemingly insurmountable 16-8 lead. However, the Lady Jacks slowly worked back into it, pulling within one late at 23-22. Whittaker and Martin hammered down back-to-back kills to secure the frame.

The fourth set featured seven ties, including at 19-19, but SFA put together an impressive 5-1 run to put the match out of reach for the Red and White.

The Lady Cards will return to action on Thursday when Central Arkansas makes the trek to McDonald Gym.
