BEAUMONT - In a team ceremony last Wednesday night at the Spindletop Steak House, the 2008 Lamar University volleyball team was given their rings commemorating the Southland Conference tournament championship and NCAA tournament appearance.

Last season Lamar posted an overall record of 17-12, going 12-4 in Southland Conference play to secure the No. 2 seed in the SLC tournament. The Lady Cardinals won the tournament with a 3-2 victory over Texas State, and made their first trip to the NCAA Tournament since 1993 where they played the University of Texas.

"It was really nice to get the team together one more time before the seniors graduate," Head coach Justin Gibert said. I am very proud of this team, not merely because of all the adversity that they endured throughout the season, but also the fact that they triumphed and found success in the midst of it. After handing out the rings to each one of the players, I asked them simply to remember and hold close to their heart the experience of achieving at their capabilities and not to settle for average in any aspect of their future lives. With that in mind, I am very hopeful and also believe that this experience will make a lasting impression on each one of the young ladies that are a part of this program."
