BEAUMONT - For the first time since 2007, Lamar will host a regular season tournament, highlighting the 2010 volleyball schedule announced by head coach Justin Gibert on Tuesday.
The three-day tournament, scheduled for Sept. 16-18, will see the Lady Cardinals square off against Southland Conference rival McNeese State on the opening Thursday. LU will play Louisiana-Lafayette in its only match Friday, before closing against Arkansas-Pine Bluff and Albany on Saturday.
Lamar will open the season on Aug. 21 with an alumni match at McDonald Gym before playing three straight road tournaments at Texas-Pan American, Cornell and Tulsa.
"The schedule is designed to complement our youth," noted Gibert. "The alumni match gives us an opportunity to work with each other on the court against a real opponent before opening the regular season at UTPA."
Following the home tournament, Lamar will jump into SLC action with a pair of road matches at Nicholls State and Southeastern Louisiana. The Lady Cardinals will compete in the SLC East Division this year and will play each of those schools twice. Lamar will face the SLC West teams just once.
"The Tulsa tournament will be a tough event and will really be a test of how well we are playing as a team," said Gibert. "It will be a good challenge for us before we host our tournament and open conference play."
For the season, Lamar will have 11 home matches. It's final four SLC contests will all be on the road, leading into the Southland Conference Tournament which will be held in Huntsville this year.
"We have made the conference tournament every year I have been here," said Gibert, "and I expect to again this season. I'm excited about the schedule and if our young players develop and play well together, we can be very successful."
