Volleyball unveils 2013 slate

June 27, 2013

BEAUMONT – The Lamar volleyball team will make its living on the road this season as the Lady Cardinals are set to play 19 of their scheduled 30 matches away from the friendly confines of McDonald Gym.

However, they won’t have to go far as the squad will play 16 matches against Texas opponents, beginning with a tournament at former conference foe Texas State to begin the 2013 campaign. LU will get started with a Friday morning meeting against the Bobcats on August 30 before returning to take on Houston later in the day. After matches against SMU and Quinnipiac on the following day, the Lady Cards will trek back to Beaumont for the home opener against UT Pan American on Monday, September 2.

Three days later, LU will head to the home of another former conference power for UTSA’s tournament, where they are set to take on the Roadrunners at 11 a.m. before a primetime meeting against perennial power Texas A&M at 7 p.m. The Lady Cards will close out play at the event against Loyola Marymount.

Following another weekday meeting at McDonald Gym, this time against Rice on September 10, the Lady Cards will finish the tournament schedule with three games at Sam Houston State. There, LU will open up SLC play against the Bearkats on the evening of Sept. 13 before taking on Washington State and Jackson State the next day.

The road swing will continue for another week as the Lady Cards are scheduled to set out for matches at McNeese State and Nicholls on September 19 and 21.

September will end with the first home weekend of the season as Houston Baptist will come to McDonald Gym for the first time as a Southland opponent on September 26. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi will follow up on the ensuing Saturday afternoon.

Three days later, a trip to Tulane will offer a brief reprieve from conference play before returning with a match against SHSU in Beaumont on October 5.

LU will set out on its longest road trip of the year the following weekend, taking on two more new Southland members in Abilene Christian on October 10 and Incarnate Word on October 12.

If the Lady Cards are in position for a late season surge, the schedule certainly benefits it as six of the last 10 matches will take place at McDonald. Southeastern Louisiana and the final new Southland member, New Orleans, will make the trip over on October 17 and 19. A four-match homestand featuring Central Arkansas, Oral Roberts, Nicholls and McNeese State will begin two weeks later.

The final two road trips of the season include Northwestern State and Stephen F. Austin on October 24 and 26 and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Houston Baptist on November 13 and 16.

The Southland Tournament will begin on November 22 in Corpus Christi.
