BEAUMONT – Lamar fans will have their first chance to see the 2014 volleyball team on Saturday as the Lady Cardinals will open up the gym for the annual Red/White scrimmage at McDonald Gym. First serve is slated for 10 a.m.
“We’ve shown a lot of improvement through the preseason,” first-year head coach Alan Edwards said. “Our offensive numbers have been really good, and we want to throw some uniforms on and see how that looks. Preseason is a grind, and we’re looking forward to tomorrow being the last two-a-day. Saturday will have the feel of a match, and that’s what you look for. It’ll be a measuring stick for us, and hopefully fire us up for next weekend.”
It will serve as a springboard into the final week of the preseason as the Lady Cards will begin the season in Houston on Aug. 29 with matches against Texas State and at Houston. The first weekend will conclude a day later against Wake Forest.
The home opener will take place on Sept. 27 against Sam Houston State.
Earlier on Thursday, LU was tabbed eighth in the annual Southland sports information directors’ preseason poll, which would see it grab the final spot in the 2014 Southland Tournament in Natchitoches, La. The coaches were slightly cooler to the Lady Cards’ chances, picking them to finish ninth. Central Arkansas, the reigning regular season and tournament champion, was voted the overwhelming favorites in both polls, with Northwestern State finishing second.
“I think it is fair based on last year, but I don’t think it’s accurate,” Edwards said. “We finished 10th last year so it’s probably based on that, but they’re not in our gym. The people voting haven’t gotten to see how far they’ve come over the past seven or eight months. Hopefully we can surprise some people.”
