DALLAS - Lamar University suffered a 3-0 (22-25, 17-25, 16-25) loss to host SMU Saturday afternoon at Moody Coliseum in its second match of the four-team SMU Doubletree Volleyball Invitational.
The Lady Cardinals have now dropped three straight matches and stand at 1-4 on the season. Lamar, which opened the tournament with a 3-0 loss to Alabama on Friday, will take on TCU this afternoon at 4:30 to close the event.
As she did the match before, sophomore outside hitter Sierra Whittaker led the team in kills with nine. However, after attacking at an impressive .346 clip against the Crimson Tide, Whittaker hit just .174 against SMU.
Lamar led the first set 19-17, but could not hang on as SMU closed with an 8-3 run to win the set 25-22. Lamar had 10 of its 31 kills in the first set, but the Mustangs were able to pick up 14 to win the set.
After dropping the second set 25-17, Lamar had its best offensive effort in set three. The Lady Cards finished with 14 kills and attacked at a .300 percentage. SMU took advantage of three LU service errors, and hit an outstanding .464 with 14 kills, to close the match 25-16.
Lamar hit just .128 for the match, but did have a slight six to five advantage over SMU in total blocks. The Lady Cardinals also were plagued with nine service errors in the match.
Freshman Madi Martin posted six kills, 23 assists and eight digs for Lamar. Redshirt freshman Megan Schwartz led Lamar with 11 digs.
Jessica Oliver led SMU with 10 kills, while Dan Powell led all players with 15 digs.
