BEAUMONT - For the first time in three years the Lamar University volleyball team will host a tournament, as they welcome Texas Southern, Jackson State, UC Riverside and Tennessee Chattanooga to McDonald Gym for the PROS Home Healthcare Invitational.

The Lady Cardinals open the tournament with a 7 p.m. showdown with the Texas Southern Tigers on Thursday, before hosting four matches on Friday and Saturday. Friday's action begins with TSU taking on Jackson State at 10 a.m. followed by Texas Southern against UC Riverside at 12:30 p.m. The afternoon match will be Riverside taking on JSU at 4:30 with the Lady Cardinals taking on Chattanooga at 7 p.m. to close out the day.

Saturday's action gets under way with the Mocs of Chattanooga taking on the Riverside Highlanders at 10 a.m., followed by Lamar and Jackson State at 12:30. The 4:30 match will be Chattanooga and Jackson State, followed by LU and UC Riverside at 7 p.m.

The Lady Cards enter the tournament with a 5-7 record after going 2-2 last weekend at the TCU tournament in Fort Worth, Texas. Lamar dropped matches to TCU and New Orleans, and defeated Georgia Southern and Denver.

The Lady Cardinals are led by Kaci Brewer and Molli Abel who are averaging 3.12 and 3.10 kills per game respectively, while Abel is the team leader in blocks with 1.14 rejections per game. Adrianne Meengs runs the offense for LU, passing out 10.52 assists per game, while knocking down 2.15 kills per game. Andrea Hamilton is the defensive anchor for the Lady Cardinals, averaging 4.44 digs per game, while Destiny Mason has averages 3.08 digs per game.

The Tigers enter Thursday night's match with a 1-7 season record, having dropped their last two matches to Prairie View A&M and Rice. TSU is led by Krystal Obi and Emma Obi who are averaging 1.71 and 1.76 kills per game.



Texas Southern and the Lady Cardinals have met eight times, with LU holding an 8-0 advantage in the win column. The last time the two teams met was on October 20, 1997, when Lamar handed TSU a 3-0 loss.
