With four pre-conference tournaments behind them, the Lamar University volleyball team will take on the Louisiana Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns Tuesday night at 7 p.m. at Earl K. Long Gym in Lafayette, La., before opening the Southland Conference schedule Friday night against Central Arkansas at the Montagne Center.
Lamar enters the match against ULL with a 3-10 record, looking to bounce back from four losses at the Jackrabbit Invitational over the weekend in South Dakota.
The Lady Cards have been led offensively by senior Buchi Okoh who has knocked down 142 kills (3.38 per game) and a .273 hitting percentage. Junior Molli Abel has added 86 kills (2.77 per match) while sophomores Meagan Adams and Lauren Rush have added 72 and 66 kills respectively. The setting duties have been split between freshman Adrianne Meengs and sophomore Ashley Todd, with the two passing out 277 and 211 assists respectively.
Defensively, Lamar has been led by Alex Brink's team-high 173 digs, while Andrea Hamilton has picked up 121. At the net, the Lady Cards have been led by Okoh's 49 blocks (1.17 per game), while Courtney Mitchell and Ariel Drake have posted 33 and 32 blocks respectively.
Louisiana Lafayette enters the match with a 3-7 season record, on the heels of back-to-back wins over Jackson State and Southeastern Louisiana. The Ragin' Cajuns are led by Jamie Senegal, Kim Rodgers and Elizabeth Inman who have posted 116, 112 and 103 kills respectively. The setting has been spit by Tara Cote and Kendra Hall who have passed out 269 and 165 assists respectively, while Erika Castro leads ULL in digs with 203.
This is the first meeting between the Lady Cardinals and Ragin' Cajuns since 2004, when Lafayette dispatched Lamar 3-0. The overall series however, has been dominated by Lamar, who holds a 38-5 record against ULL.
After Tuesday's non-conference tilt, the Lady Cards will open the SLC schedule, taking on Central Arkansas at 7:30 p.m. in the Montagne Center. In addition to beginning SLC play for both teams, it will be Lamar's first home match of the season. The weekend will conclude with a Saturday night showdown with Northwestern State at 7:30 p.m. in the Montagne Center.
