After helping the Lamar University volleyball team to a pair of wins to open conference play last week, junior libero Andrea Hamilton was named Southland Conference defensive player of the week.
Hamilton, a junior from Austin, Texas, anchored the Lady Cardinal defense in their two wins last week, averaging 6.17 digs per game. Her defensive efforts helped Lamar to their sixth straight win, the most since the 2004 season.
In Friday night's win over Nicholls State, Hamilton collected 14 digs to lead the Lamar defense. In addition to her defense, Hamilton added five service aces to lead the Lady Cardinals at the service line. On Saturday Hamilton again led Lamar defensively, picking up 23 digs.
Hamilton has recorded 20 or more digs on six occasions this season, three of which have come during LU's six-match winning streak. She's also been one of the top defensive players in the SLC this season, ranking fifth in the conference with 4.70 digs per game.
Hamilton and the Lady Cardinals will be in action again Thursday night when they take on the Sugar Bears of Central Arkansas at 7:00 p.m. in Conway Ark.
