BEAUMONT, Texas -
The Lamar University volleyball team has been the ultimate road warriors this season, playing 17 of their 18 matches away from home. They finally return home this week when they host the McNeese State Cowgirls Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m. at the Montagne Center.
The Lady Cardinals started the season with 13 matches on the road, playing their first home match on September 20 against Nicholls State. The day after their 3-0 win over Nicholls, Lamar was forced to evacuate Beaumont due to Hurricane Rita, and spent the next three and a half weeks one the road, two weeks of which were spent living on the UT-San Antonio campus.
The hurricane caused the Lady Cardinals to cancel home contests against Texas State, UTSA and Southeastern Louisiana, and a road match against McNeese, all four of which will not be replayed this season.
Since starting back up on October 4, Lamar volleyball is 2-2 in their last four matches. They returned to action with a 3-1 win at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi before dropping back-to-back matches to Stephen F. Austin and Sam Houston. Lamar bounced back from the losses, dropping the UT-Arlington Lady Mavericks 3-0 in Arlington Friday night.
Lamar has a 4-14 record on the season, and a 2-4 record in Southland Conference play. The Lady Cardinals are led by Buchi Okoh who is averaging 3.53 kills per game, while Molli Abel and Lauren Rush are averaging 2.95 and 2.54 respectively. Setter Ashley Todd has passed out 725 assists this season , while Erica Brown leads the team with 254 digs on the season.
McNeese enters the match with a 9-6 overall record, and a 4-2 record in SLC play. The Cowgirls also handed UT-Arlington a 3-0 loss over the weekend.
After the McNeese match Tuesday night, the Lady Cardinals will prepare to host Northwestern State and Louisiana-Monroe on Friday and Saturday. Both matches over the weekend will be played at 7:30 p.m. in the Montagne Center.
