Brewer and Mason Earn SLC Player of the Week Honors

BEAUMONT - After leading the Lamar University volleyball team to a 2-1 week, including a win that snapped Stephen F. Austin's 62-match conference winning streak, outside hitters Kaci Brewer and Destiny Mason claimed the Southland Conference Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week honors.

Brewer, a sophomore from Castroville, Texas, received the offensive award after averaging a double-double for the week with 13.7 kills and 15 digs per match. In Lamar's 3-2 win over SFA, she knocked down 20 kills and a career-high 24 digs while hitting .347 against the leagues best defense. In Friday's win over Sam Houston, she had six kills and 12 digs and in Tuesday night's 3-2 loss at McNeese she had a team-high 15 kills and nine digs.

Mason, a freshman from Baytown, Texas, earned the defensive player of the week award after averaging a double-double with 19.3 digs and 10.6 kills per match. She had a career-high 27 digs along with 14 kills and one block in Saturday's win over SFA, while picking 15 digs in LU's 3-0 win over Sam Houston. In Tuesday night's match against McNeese State, she registered a double-double with 16 digs and 12 kills while posting three blocks.

Mason averaged 19.3 digs and 10.6 kills last week


This is the first time Brewer and Mason have earned SLC player of the week honors in their career. The Lady Cardinals have earned five players of the week this season as a team, with setter Adrianne Meengs being named offensive player of the week twice and libero Andrea Hamilton earning the defensive honor once.

The Lady Cards are now tied for the conference lead with SFA at 11-1. They will be back in action on Friday at 7:00 p.m. at McDonald Gym when they host the University of Central Arkansas who is 7-5 in Conference play. Friday's game will also be "Pink Out" McDonald Gym night, sponsored by Zeta Tau Alpha. Everyone in attendance is encouraged to wear pink to wrap up Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
