Volleyball to continue tournament push
Oct. 31, 2012
BEAUMONT – If the Lamar women’s volleyball team is to continue its tournament push, this weekend’s matches will be pivotal as the Lady Cardinals will welcome both Oral Roberts and Central Arkansas to McDonald Gym.
The two teams entered the 2012 season as clear favorites for the Southland title, but things have changed in recent weeks as UCA has dropped two of its last three matches to fall to second in the SLC with an 11-3 record and a 23-4 mark overall. ORU is currently 8-6 in SLC play and 12-13 overall.
Lamar will be looking to build off of this past Saturday’s sweep of McNeese State to grab one of the final spots in the conference tournament. The Lady Cards (10-18, 2-12 SLC) are ninth in the league standings and chasing seventh place Southeastern Louisiana and Nicholls. Both teams are entering this weekend with 5-10 marks.
Earlier this month, LU dropped both matches 3-0 on the UCA/ORU road swing, but this week’s visitors will be playing a different team this time around as Cynthia McCollum made her much-awaited return to the Lady Cards last week. The senior was a clear star in Saturday’s win over McNeese, hitting .345 with 11 kills and four aces, and she will be looking to keep it going through the last home weekend of the season.
Fellow seniors Christina Hobbs, Wendy Krell and Alex Morford will also be key in the hunt for the SLC Tournament. The group will be honored for their contributions to the Lamar volleyball program prior to Saturday’s match with ORU.
First serve on Thursday is set for 7:00 p.m., and Saturday’s tilt is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.
