Lamar Picks Up Three All-Southland Honors
Nov. 18, 2009
FRISCO, Texas -- The Lamar volleyball team saw three student-athletes named to the All-Southland Conference team as announced by the league office on Wednesday. Senior setter Adrianne Meengs was voted onto the first team, freshman middle blocker Wendy Krell picked up second team and Freshman of the Year honors, while senior outside hitter Lauren Holdorff received an honorable mention nod after appearing on 25 percent of the ballots. Voting was conducted by the league's head coaches and volleyball sports information contacts at each school. For Meengs, the honor adds to her already impressive list of accolades since she arrives on campus four years ago. The Friendswood, Texas native was named to the first team for the second time in three seasons, following her sophomore year in which she also picked up the Setter of the Year award. She is the first Lady Cardinal to earn multiple first team accolades in her career since Natalie Sarver in 2001 and 2002. Meengs leads the team with 8.95 assists per set, while ranking second in hitting percentage at .293 and fifth in kills with 1.8 per set. She is the only player in the SLC to rank in the top-10 in both assists and hitting percentage. She ranks seventh in overall assists (857), sixth in assists per set (8.74) and ranks sixth in hitting percentage (.293). She also has the only triple-doubles in the league this season with three to her credit. Krell becomes the fifth Lamar player to earn one of the conference's top freshman/newcomer awards, joining Kathy Givens in 1983, Trisha Beissel in 1984, Miriam Erickson in 1991 and Kim Green in 1992. Givens and Beissel both picked up the Newcomer of the Year Award as true freshmen when there wasn't a specific award for first years, while Erickson and Green earned the mentions as Sun Belt members.
Krell has led the Southland in hitting during league play for the last six weeks, converting .354 pct. of her swings and 2.2 kps. A native of Plano, Texas, she has posted 182 kills overall and leads the team in all games hitting at a .300 clip. Holdorff has totaled 736 kills with a .262 career hitting pct. in 106 career matches at Lamar. This season she has averaged 2.8 kps while raising her kills and kps each year in Beaumont. Lamar will open defense of its 2008 SLC Tournament championship against UT Arlington on Friday at 1:30 p.m.. |
