LAKE CHARLES – Leigh Lattimore and Kayla de Bondt didn’t waste much time putting an imprint on the Lamar women’s cross country team, running away for a victory in Friday evening’s season opener at the McNeese Relays at Ward 3 Multisports Complex.
Lattimore, a graduate student out of England, took off for an early lead on the 3,000-meter course before handing it off to Australian sophomore de Bondt for the second and final lap. The duo completed the race with a time of 22:48.
Two other LU duos also ran in the event. Belinda Aguilar and Kaitlynn Warren placed fifth with a time of 23:54, and the team of Rachel Davee and Megan Flanagan was seventh at 24:53.
On the men’s side, the McNeese pairing of Matt Stephenson and Ryan Holroyd won with a time of 18:34. The Lamar men used the event mostly for training purposes, but it did mark the competitive debut for the trio of Sean Chalmers, Sean Guiney and Matt Jackson.
Cross country season will begin in earnest for both the LU men and women in on Sept. 13 at the Rice Invitational in Houston.
