CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas -
A fourth straight conference championship was not in the cards for the Lamar University women's cross country team, as the Lady Cardinals were edged by the Islanders of Texas A&M Corpus Christi at the 44th Southland Conference Cross Country Championship at West Guth Park in Corpus Christi, Texas.
For the second straight year the top two spots in the SLC championship were claimed by a pair of Lady Cardinals, as a repeat of the 2006 final played out again this year. Clerc Koenck and Renee Graham finished in first and second place, running away from the remainder of the field.
Koenck registered a time of 20:48.1 over 6,000 meters to win her second straight championship. She becomes the fifth consecutive SLC champion to repeat as champion of the conference. The streak of consecutive champions stretches back to 1997 with Sarah Salmon of McNeese State winning in 97 and 1998.
Graham continued her run of second place finishes in the SLC championship, grabbing the No. 2 spot for the third straight season. The junior posted a time of 21:06.0, 21 seconds ahead of the third place finisher.
Rachel Kingsford was the third Lady Cardinal to finish in the top 10, grabbing a 10th place finish in a time of 21:58.7, while Stacey Monteau finished in 17th place in a time of 22:13.7. The fifth finisher across the line for LU was Karesse Lethermon, who placed 23rd in a time of 22:29.2.
Rounding out the LU finishers was Merci Bungei and Andrea Smith, who placed 35th and 44th respectively. Bungei turned in a 23:15.7 performance, while Smith ran a 23:37.4.
The Lady Cardinals finished four points back of the Islanders, registering 52 team points to TAMUCC's 48 points.
The Lady Cardinals will be in action again on November 10, when they run at the NCAA South Central Regional in Fayetteville, Ark.
