WACO, Texas -
The Lamar University men's and women's cross country teams will open the 2008 season Friday evening at the Baylor Twilight Invitational at the Baylor University intramural fields in Waco, Texas.
The women's race is scheduled to get under way at 6:30 p.m. with the men to follow at 7 p.m.
The Cardinal men return most of their team from a year ago, a team which won their second straight Southland Conference championship. All American Francis Kasagule and 2006 NCAA qualifier Samuel Kosgei will lead the way for Lamar, after finishing first and fourth at Baylor a year ago. Frank Bwambale Drew Bean and Randy Becker, three key components to Lamar's success a year ago, will also be looked to for strong showings while Ewan Simpson and Jared Rodriguez return for another season. Joining that cast will be freshman Spencer Prudhomme, Aaron Malek, Austin Malek, Ryan Kelly and Jess Williams.
The Lady Cardinals will be led by letter winners Stacey Monteau and Mercy Bungei. The two veterans will lead a cast of six first time competitors for LU. Daisy Cantu, Emily Carpenter, Sandy Castro and Taylor make their freshman debut for Lamar while tennis standouts Maria Gutierrez and Mariaryeni Gutierrez will run in their first cross country race.
Joining Lamar at the meet will be men's and women's cross country teams from three South Central Region foes in Baylor, TCU and SMU. Also expected to compete are Angelo State, Dallas Baptist, Northwood, Tarleton State and UT-Tyler.
After Friday's meet, the cross country teams will be in action again on September 20, when they run at the Rice Invitational in Houston, Texas.
