BEAUMONT - After impressive showings at the Baylor Twilight Invitational in Waco, Texas, Lamar University cross country runners Francis Kasagule and Renee Graham were named the Aeropostale cross country athletes of the week by the Southland Conference.

Kasagule started the 2007 season by winning the 6K race in a time of 17:59.9. He was the overall champion in a race that included competitors from the University of Texas, Texas A&M, Baylor, UT-Tyler, TCU, Houston and Dallas Baptist. The Lamar men won the team title with a 43 point total, with the University of Texas finishing second with 57 points.

This is the first cross country athlete of the week honor Kasagule, who was an NCAA All-American last year, has earned in his Lamar University career. Overall, this is the fourth time he has been named athlete of the week in his career, twice earning the distinction in indoor track and once during the outdoor season.

Graham started the season by coming in second place with a 13:41.3 performance in the women's 4K race. She helped Lamar to a third place finish behind Baylor and Texas A&M. The meet also included SMU, TCU and Houston.

This is Graham's second cross country athlete of the week honor in her career, winning it once during the 2005 season. Graham was also named athlete of the week in indoor track last season, for a total of three athlete of the week awards in her career.

Kasagule, Graham and the rest of the LU cross country men's and women's teams will be in action again on September 22, when they run at the Texas A&M Invitational in College Station, Texas.
