FRISCO - After taking home an impressive fifth-place finish in last week's Notre Dame Invitational, the Southland Conference named Leigh Lattimore its Cross Country Athlete of the Week on Tuesday afternoon.
Lattimore, a native of England, has been exceptional since transferring to Lamar from St. Mary's University College in London. The graduate student took home a pair of victories in her first two races of the season leading into last Friday's meet, which featured eight teams ranked in the top 30 by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. Lattimore stepped up to the challenge, completing the five-kilometer course in 17:10.2 to finish fifth out of 198 individuals.
Her performance played a major role in Lamar's ninth place showing in the event, as the Lady Cards out-dueled fourth-ranked Duke. The effort was recognized earlier this week as LU moved up to fifth in the South Central regional rankings as well.
This marks the first Athlete of the Week award for Lamar since Matt Johnsen and Sam Stabler each earned the honors last year.
Both the men's and women's squads will return to action this week at Houston Baptist before setting out to Terre Haute, Ind., for the Pre-National Meet.
