BEAUMONT – The Lamar cross country program will be aiming for more history on Friday morning as the men’s team sets out to extend its Southland-record seventh consecutive conference championship at Tyrrell Park.
“This is the championship phase, and we’re excited to get out here and start competing for a conference championship on both the men’s side and the women’s side,” assistant coach Darren Gauson said.
The men’s team enters ranked fifth in the region by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, and are looking for a record 12th title in the event. Lamar will be led by junior Matt Johnsen, who is looking to improve upon his second place finish last season.
On the women’s side, the Lady Cardinals will be looking to return to the form that saw LU take home three straight titles from 2004-2006.
“The women have done a great job preparing and progressing over the course of the season,” Gauson said. “We ran well early at meets like Rice, but they were great at the Pre-National a couple weeks ago. I’m really excited about them, and I think we’re in the mix there.”
The race will be run at Henry Homberg Golf Course at Tyrrell Park in Beaumont. The men’s race is set for a 9 a.m. start, and the women are set to begin at 10 a.m.
